D’banj says he cancelled Koko Concert 2013 in honour of Mandela (Yeah right)

Sad news for D’banj fans: There will be no Koko Concert this year.

The Pop singer himself made the announcement on his Twitter, explaining that the yearly concert was cancelled because of the ‘Madiba Legacy Concert‘ which held yesterday (December 18, 2013) at The Oceanview Restaurant, Victoria Island, Lagos.

‘Hey Kokolets, the yearly Koko Concert has been cancelled because of the Madiba Legacy Concert happening tomorrow at the Ocean View event center!!‘, he wrote.

D’banj’s reason for cancelling the event does sound very cheeky as we wonder how a one-day tribute concert (which he clearly did not put together) would stop him from holding his own show this December.

He has however promised to make it up to his fans by hosting three ‘Koko Parties’ this yuletide season. ‘Not to worry I’m hosting 3 Koko parties this season for my Dear FANS’, he added.

The first Koko Concert was held in the UK (2010) with the following year’s holding in Nigeria. Last year, D’banj brought G.O.O.D Music acts Big Sean, Pusha T along with Tinie Tempah and Idris Elba for the concert.

Heavy Collabo! Wale records with D’banj, Don Jazzy, Olamide

Wale Folarin who is currently in Nigeria, was pictured last night in the Mavin Headquarters where he met up with Don Jazzy and recorded a song with D’banj and Olamide.

A picture taken while the recording was going on shows the US rapper, D’banj, Olamide, Kay Switchstaring closely into the screens while Don Jazzy handles the track production. Others who witnessed the monster collaboration were Storm Records’ Tola Odunsi, Trace Nigeria’s Phil Nwankwo (who made the link up) and Don Jazzy’s father.

Social media has gone bonkers especially Instagram with Don Jazzy, Olamide, Kay Swtich and many others reposting the photo. It’s certainly not just because Wale is in the studio that has got everyone hyped up. This is the first time in over 20 months since Don Jazzy and D’banj will be seen in the studio together, working.

The pair who parted ways last year after dissolving their Mo’Hit’s Records have, like grown men should, moved and put all differences behind. Earlier in the year, Don Jazzy and D’banj performed together at Do2un’s wedding to D’banj’s younger sister’s wedding. Last weekend, they hung out and shared a cigar at Ice Prince’s ‘Fire of Zamani’ concert.

Hours earlier, D’banj had raised dust on Twitter when he claimed Don Jazzy and himself ‘built the Industry of today’. ‘Always a good feeling hanging out with my broda from another mother @DONJAZZY made me remember what we built “The Industry today” HBD Bro!!‘, @iambbanj wrote on Twitter.

#Backinbusiness D’banj signs endorsement deal with Globacom

NET has reliably confirmed that Dapo ‘D’banj’ Oyebanjo has signed a multi-million Naira brandendorsement deal with Globacom Nigeria.

The Pop star has inked his second endorsement deal with the Nigerian telecommunications company after weeks of deliberations. D’banj now joins the likes of heavyweight contemporary musiciansPsquare as well as recently unveiled ambassadors Naeto C, M.I, Lynxxx, Bez, Burna Boy, Flavour, Waje, Omawumi, and little known Chee.

Insiders tell us the deal is ‘unbelievable’; with those familiar with details saying it may be one of the costliest signings of 2013. Exact figures were not immediately available. But NET learnt that just like hisformer deal with the company, this new ambassadorship will also come with added values, including an automobile, and major performance commitments.

D’banj and Globacom fell out in 2010 when the pop singer reportedly refused to extend his initial 2008 N70M two-year contract. Glo was allegedly offering something less, far less than what Psquaregot (the Pop twins signed a whooping N240M with the company in 2010).

The whole trouble had however started back in 2008 when D’banj was replaced by Psquare after he allegedly demanded a N2M fee for every performance at the then GLO Campus Tour.

But it’s three years later and plenty has changed.

With GLO having lost the biggest names to competition, it’s understandable they’re reuniting with D’Banj, a true superstar with credible fan base, despite not having had a major fresh hit in years. And it’s a coup of sorts – as Etisalat had nearly reached an agreement with D’Banj to be one of their brand ambassadors. Etisalat is already in bed with top rappers Ice Prince and Olamide while there are rumours a 2face Idibia deal is also pending.

MTN Nigeria is currently winning the brand ambassadorship war triggered by the recent mobile number portability policy. The market leader has all the star power in their nest with the likes of Don Jazzy, Wizkid, Davido, Iyanya, Tiwa Savage, KCEE and a few other prominent acts all repping ‘yello’.

A rep from GLO ‘Charles’ tells us it is not in his place to talk about the signing. D’banj’s manager and Executive Director of DKM Group Tony Nwakalor did not pick or return our calls.

‘D’banj signed with who?!‘, Spice, a rep for D’banj told our reporter, apparently surprised.

It is expected that GLO will announce the deal in a matter of days.

OOPS…DBANJ flops in Zimbabwe

D’Banj had a rather lackluster night as he failed to perform to expectations of the hundreds of Zimbabweans fans who thronged the Glamis Arena for the Lion Lager Summer Beer Festival on night of Saturday 26th of November. Having been made the headliner of the show alongside Uganda’s Bebe Cool as voted by the consumers of Lion Larger beer, he landed in Zimbabwe a day before the show to the joy of many fans.

From the Zimbabwe twitter chatter to newspaper headlines which all read ‘D’Banj outshined by Bebe Cool’. He had been said to exhaust the songs the crowd knew before his set was over and put up antics only to be booed by them. The Kokomaster alongside rapper and friend Ikechukwu resorted to calling about 10 ladies onto the stage, whom he asked to dance one after another. All these amid boos from the crowd. This dragged on for some time and most people had already started leaving the venue at this point.

Regardless of some of his tracks such as Fall in love, Pop Something, Why Me, Mr Endowed, and Oliver Twist being popular in the country as they received massive airplay on local radio stations and rocked night clubs, the night belonged to his visiting counterpart, Ugandan ragga musician Bebe Cool, real name Moses Ssali.

D’banj with Bebe Cool after their press conference

According to the Victoria, a blogger and fan;“He performed Fall in Love first, followed by Oliver Twist, Kukere remix, Don’t Tell Me Nonsense, Igwe and Why Me. After that, he lost the plot”

Dancehall star King Shaddy put up a scintillating performance as an opening act, showing energy as he belted some of his hits.

The atmosphere became even electric when Winky D(a Zimbabwean reggae act) introduced the popular Tendazvaitwa “Lipsy” Chitimbe on stage. As a closing act, D’Banj found it difficult to match the previous performers who had set great standards. Popularly known as Eja Nla, D’Banj failed to match what fellow countrymen PSquare, did last year at the same event.

Ice Prince, Olamide sign endorsement deals with Etisalat…Dbanj and Tuface to follow

Etisalat Nigeria has unveiled their first set of ambassadors – rapper Panshak ‘Ice Prince’ Zamani and Olamide Adedeji have signed endorsementdeals with the telecommunications company.

We are told the deals have been under the works for a long while with the telecoms company being sceptical about going down the ‘endorsement craze’ path which have been threaded by rival companies MTN Nigeria and Globacom.

Both deals are worth around N20m each.

The rappers let the cat out of the bag as they tweeted at each other ‘The swaggg ETISALAT get bwuoy no be here!!! Ask @olamide_YBNL !!!!’, with Olamide replying ‘#EtisalatFrosh my nigga’

A rep for Ice Prince has confirmed the deal; ‘Yes it’s true, we’ve been on it for a while but it finally came through’.

NET earlier reported that Ice Prince had turned down an offer made by Globacom, demanding for $1m instead. The deal never pulled through.

Olamide’s manager Alex Okeke could not be reached as at the time of this report.

We are told the deals which cover only Nigeria will last for a year and after then would be renewed if the company deems it fit.

NET reported earlier that D’banj had also inked a deal with the telecoms company with hismanager Tony Nwakolor telling us an announcement would be made in due time. We are told 2face Idibia might follow.

“If I say I don’t miss Don Jazzy, I am lying" - D'banj

Interview with Punch News Paper:

“If I say I don’t miss Don Jazzy, I am lying. I have spent the better part of my career with him. I was married to him in a way (laughs). So I miss everything about Mo’Hits: the family, the movement, and the vibe of being in the studio with him. I miss the jokes and the arguments, but I have since keyed into the notion that nothing can stop a moving train.

“Nevertheless we can always do music together. The track, ‘Top of the World’ was produced by a Grammy Award Winner. The songs ‘Finally’ and ‘Don’t Tell Me Nonsense’ was produced by my producer while ‘Oliver Twist’ was produced by Don Jazzy. So, why won’t I have him on my 10 years anniversary album?

“I have never said I am a musician; I am an entertainer. Some people say I can pick up a microphone and become a comedian. Therefore nobody should come and ask if I want to go into acting because they should know I am already an actor. It depends on when the right script and concept lands in my hands.

“For now, I am concerned about achieving new things and breaking new grounds. By the time I enter Hollywood, I believe that I’ll become as successful as I have been as a singer. The movie titled ‘I am Banga Lee’, starring Genevieve, to be released in 2014, won’t be a bad idea,” He said.

On Genevieve Nnaji:

“Apart from the fact that she is my friend, she has been a part of my success. There is no way you are going to tell my story that Genevieve’s name will not come up because she featured in my biggest song of all time, Fall in Love. So if E True Story comes to Nigeria to interview me, she will definitely be called upon to tell my story,” he said.
As if to confirm that there was more to his relationship with the actress than he had always admitted, D’banj added,

“I would love to have Genevieve as my wife. We never can tell what God plans for us in the future. I have studied her and I realised that anyone that has her as his woman has found himself a treasure. Just like the Bible says, any man who finds a wife, finds a good thing.”
